Gentian Extract

BODILY INFLUENCES: This invigorating tonic is handed down to us from the very early antiquity of medicine, from the Greeks, Arabs, and others long forgotten. In Germany and Austria, it is customary in pubs to include on the shelf, a little clay jug with a glazed finish and the characteristic blue Gentian flower, and is dispensed under the name Enzian (Gentian) as an immediate remedy for over indulgence. While it tastes does not immediately recommend its use, its effect is sought after and a person learns to appreciate its taste for that reason. Its roots contain a vast quantity of condensed oxygen, thus occurs an exhilarating tonic action. Recognized medical use from the time of antiquity to date would fill a volume all its own. Perhaps it is best for us to think of it as containing six powerful digestaids. The Dispensatory of the United States offers this word of highly significant and workable advice in the use of Gentian: "It is the condition of the stomach and the system generally, not the name of the disease which must be taken into consideration when prescribing it. There is scarcely a complaint in which it cannot be advantageously given under all circumstances". At once, a person sees a prevailing philosophy in by which the herbalist is often considered to work miracles. While diagnostic machines with mysterious names and "buzzers and lights", are no doubt impressive and expensive, they are not necessary to building better health naturally. What is necessary is to know the remedy and use it. Beyond this, happy chemists in their sterile towers can busy themselves finding the mechanisms of herbs or why a remedy works the way it does. When they do, we will be receptive to hear their findings, as it will be interesting. But, for the herbalist, building better health is as simple as recognizing we do have herbal solutions for physical problems, seeing what herbs are needed to get at the root cause of the malfunction in that area of the body and using it. Then health returns and we are all happier.
